Why must you heat up alkali and ammonium salts in order for an alkali reaction to take place?

I know that ammonium salts plus an alkali will produce water, salt and ammonia gas when heated. Question is, why must the solution of alkali and ammonium salts to be heated in order for the ammonia to be released? I woud prefer a answer with a nice webbie backing up the answer.
