Describe how an empathetic stance is effective when dealing with an angry customer?

If you are just standing there looking empathetic, not doing anything but nodding, it probably isn't gonna help. In fact it will probably make the situation worse. If you cannot get a manager, instead, grab a piece of paper, and start writing down the customers complaint. That's what they want to see, that their complaint is being taken seriously.
